John Pope

Born on August 1, 1824, at Langside (Longside?), Aberdeenshire, Scotland. When a young boy, went to Galena to work in lead mines. Returned to go to school at Twinsburg, Ohio, in 1848. While returning home from another visit to Galena, stopped at Deacon Ellis' place in Newport Township. Bought farm near there of 100 acres, as an investment. Next spring, returned to Newport to sell the farm, but finding no buyer, planted crops instead. Later traded some mining land at Galena for 120 acres near Wadsworth. Married Mary Ann Hubbell on July 8, 1852, at Newport Township, Illinois. See tree above for eight children. Joined Millburn Church on October 7, 1867. Died January 10, 1881, at Newport Township, Lake County, Illinois.

John's Parents

John Pope was born in 1793 at Longside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Married Isabella Center, in 1815, at Longside. She was born in 1790, at Longside, and died September 17, 1866, at Northfield, Ohio. Eight other children, all born at Longside: Barbara, born in 1818 at Longside, married Mr. Darrow, died November 30, 1866, at Northfield, Ohio; William, born on August 1, 1822, at Longside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, died July 22, 1887, at Cleveland, Ohio; Isabella, born in 1823 at Longside, married Mr. Sterling, died January 26, 1885, at Revanna Portage Co., Ohio; John, of this sketch; Margaret, born on October 16, 1826, at Longside, married Mr. Mackey, died April 24, 1885, at Peninsula, Ohio; Mary, born in 1828 at Longside, married Mr. Center, died on June 21, 1869, at San Francisco, California; Alexander, born on March 15, 1830, at Longside, died on April 2, 1916, at Elkhart, Indiana; Helen, born in August, 1832, at Longside, died on January 3, 1887, at Macedonia, Ohio; Francis, born on December 9, 1835,at Longside, twin of George, did not marry, died on January 19, 1880, at Macedonia, Ohio; George, born on December 9, 1835, at Longside, twin of Francis, did not marry, died on February 19, 1905, at Macedonia, Ohio.

Came to America in 1836 aboard an old whaling vessel. On board for twelve weeks. Many were sick during the stormy voyage. Landed at Quebec, went down the St. Lawrence to Pennsylvania, moving to a farm at Northfield (Macedonia), Ohio. Died on December 14, 1858, at Northfield, Ohio.

Mary Ann Hubbell

Born on November 20, 1821, at Queensbury, Warren County, New York. Married John Pope. Joined Millburn Church on November 3, 1867. Died on March 7, 1892, at 94 Whipple Street, Chicago, Illinois.

John Dudley

Born on December 28, 1854, at Newport Township, Illinois. Married Lillian Caroline McDougal on May 29, 1889, at Friend, Nebraska. She was born on May 22, 1871, at Brockville in Canada. She died on December 20, 1938, at Waukegan, Illinois.

Mary Abby

Born on January 31, 1857, at Newport Township, Illinois. Died on February 25, 1857, at Newport Township, Illinois.

William Hubbell

Born on January 16, 1858, at Newport Township, Illinois. Married Lucy Mary Cooke on November 13, 1889, at Waukegan, Illinois. She was born on August 7, 1866, at Waukegan, and died on April 10, 1945. (photos available:
1884, 1939). Lived at 906 Ridge Avenue, Evanston, in 1943. Children. William was born and brought up on a farm in Newport Township, Lake County. His family attended Millburn Church. Went to the local country schools until he began attending Waukegan Township High School, graduating in 1878. Taught at the York House school. In 1880, went to Colorado with brother John, where they worked on sheep ranches. After John went home, William stayed on to build fence on Table Mountain near Golden. Taught school in the Dudley Smith district during the winter of 1880-81. Studied law at the union College of Law (now NorthWestern) in the fall of 1881. Graduated in 1883 with William Jennings Bryan, with whom he had roomed for a while. Opened a law office. Moved to Biloxi, Mississippi, for a while. Returned to the area. Died on July 10, 1943, at Newport Township, Illinois. (photos available: 1883, 1892, 1893, 1898, 1939).

Lucy Mary Cooke was the daughter of Attorney Homer Cooke; considered the one time dean of the Illinois bar, who died on December 5, 1923, of pneumonia. He was 91 years old, having been born on January 5, 1832, at Stamford, Vermont. He was a friend of both Presidents Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt and had known every Illinois governor and US president since Lincoln. Specializing in municipal law, he had practiced in Waukegan for more than fifty-two years. He had pleaded a case at the US Supreme Court and received notice of winning that bitterly fought legal battle while on his deathbed. The case had been begun in 1891 in the Lake County Circuit Court. At the time of the Chicago Fire, in 1871, Homer Cooke lost a large library and many papers of value, when his offices in Chicago were destroyed.

Henry Alexander

Born on May 7, 1860, at Newport Township, Illinois. Twin of Jessie. Married Mary Elizabeth Kenyon on October 24, 1889, at Elkhart, Indiana. She was born on June 7, 1865, at Elkhart, Indiana. Children. Died on August 17, 1945, at Wilmette, Illinois. (photo available: 1892).

Jessie Agnes

Born on May 7, 1860, at Newport Township, Illinois. Twin of Henry. Died on March 1, 1862, at age 1 year 9 months and 23 days, at Newport Township, Illinois. Buried in Oakdale Cemetery.

James Brown

Born on February 23, 1862, at Newport Township, Illinois. Married Mary Isabell Hale on June 25, 1896, at Evanston, Illinois. She was born on October 5, 1867, at Waukegan, Illinois. She died on March 6, 1926, at La Jolla, California.

William Cooke

Born on September 22, 1890, at 409 Water Street, Waukegan, Illinois. Graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1908. Graduated from NorthWestern University in 1912. Worked for Continental and Commercial Bank (1914) in Chicago. Enlisted on June 5, 1917, at Officers Training Camp, Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Died in Paris, France, on October 17, 1918, of "Spanish Flu". Buried in Millburn Cemetery in 1921. (photos available:

Mary Caroline

Born on July 20, 1892, at 94 Whipple Street, Chicago. Married Newton Dean Whipple on December 26, 1920, at Waukegan, Illinois. He was born on September 3, 1893. (photos available: 1892, 1893, 1894, 1896, 1897, 1903, 1905, 1906).

Barbara

Born on April 5, 1907, at 1105 Grant Street, Evanston, Illiniois. Attended Hockaday School in 1918. Graduated from Monticello Seminary in 1925. Graduated from Barnard College, New York, in 1927. Worked for the Illinois Bell Telephone Company (read feature about her in 1950 issue of Bell Telephone News). Died on November 28, 1998 (obituary). (photos available: 1907, 1912, 1922, 1937).

Known as Holly. Born on April 23, 1892, at Portland, Oregon. Married Edwin Hunt "Ned" Badger on May 15, 1915. He died on May 11, 1964, at Evanston Hospital. Children: Edwin Hart, born May 27, 1916; Mary Frances, born November 4, 1919; Samuel Cowles, born October 27, 1929. Died in April, 1984, at Wilmette, Illinois.

Henry Kenyon

Born on January 31, 1894, at Ravenswood, Illinois. Married Marcella Cook on July 20, 1920. She was born on May 28, 1895. Children: Marjorie, born on January 14, 1922, married Frank Abel; Richard Kenyon, born on September 14, 1929, grew up in Evanston. Died on July 29, 1938, at Chicago, Illinois.

Isabelle

Born on January 2, 1903, at Wilmette, Illinois. Married Melvin Neahr Veeder on September 28, 1929, at Wilmette, Illinois. He was born on March 13, 1904, at Glencoe, Illinois. He died on December 25, 1964, at Wilmette, Illinois. Died in 1997 in California.

Elizabeth

Born on September 15, 1904, at Wilmette, Illinois. Married Sherman Barnett on September 14, 1927, at Wilmette, Illinois. He died on July 25, 1965. Died on March 9, 1996.
